Freshwater pearl culture is an evolving industry in India with significant potential for economic growth, particularly in regions like Karnataka. The cultivation of pearls involves the use of freshwater mussels as hosts for the formation of pearls. This review explores the history, current status, biological aspects, farming processes, and the economic implications of freshwater pearl culture in India. With the rise in demand for pearls in jewellery, as well as growing interest in sustainable aquaculture, the future prospects of this industry look promising. The review also discusses the strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities in freshwater pearl farming, while also focusing on the technical aspects like the process of pearl farming, quality analysis, and recent advancements. Additionally, it outlines the market potential, by-products, and the prospects of pearl farming in Karnataka. The paper concludes by assessing the future growth opportunities and recommends strategies to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of freshwater pearl culture in India.
