Abstract

Post-harvest losses (PHL) in fisheries result in significant reductions in the quantity and quality of fish and seafood from harvest to consumption, impacting livelihoods, food security, and sustainability. This study aims to analyse the causes, impacts, and potential mitigation strategies for PHL, with a focus on small-scale and artisanal fisheries in developing countries. This review identifies key causes of PHL, including physical damage, spoilage due to biochemical and microbiological factors, inadequate infrastructure, market inefficiencies, and knowledge gaps. Using case studies from Bangladesh, Zambia, and other regions, the study reveals that up to 10% of the catch is lost due to poor handling and spoilage, with substantial economic and social consequences. It also highlights that simple interventions, such as improved handling, chilling, and better market linkages, can significantly reduce losses. The findings recommend investing in cold-chain infrastructure, enhancing fishers' training, and promoting public-private partnerships to scale up mitigation strategies. Effective reduction of PHL requires a comprehensive approach involving technical solutions, policy support, and improved governance to ensure sustainability and food security in fisheries.
