Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) has emerged as a key enabling technology for overcoming these limitations by deploying a large number of antennas at the base station to serve multiple users simultaneously. This study evaluates the performance of Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks using MATLAB-based channel modeling to examine how antenna scaling and propagation environments influence system performance. The simulation considers antenna configurations of 8×8, 16×16, and 64×64 under Rayleigh and Rician fading channels representing urban and rural environments respectively, with performance evaluated using Bit Error Rate (BER), Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and Spectral Efficiency. Results show that increasing antenna size significantly enhances system performance, with the 64×64 configuration achieving the lowest BER and highest spectral efficiency, while Rician channels consistently outperform Rayleigh channels due to stronger Line-of-Sight components. The results align with established Massive MIMO theory that emphasizes spatial multiplexing and beamforming gains as key enablers of improved spectral efficiency and reliability in modern wireless systems. Furthermore, the study identifies antenna scaling and beamforming as effective solutions for improving network reliability, throughput, and spectral efficiency in LTE-Advanced system. The study concludes that Massive MIMO significantly improves LTE network performance and recommends large-scale antenna deployment to enhance communication reliability in Nigeria’s diverse propagation environments. Overall, the findings support the advancement of next-generation wireless communication systems and provide a useful reference for researchers and engineers working on LTE and emerging 5G technologies.
