Technological advancement, employment creation, and economic growth are all significantly influenced by the manufacturing industry. Systemic issues like low productivity, little innovation, and an excessive dependence on imported technologies still plague Nigeria's industry. This review examines the role of research particularly in microbiology and biotechnology in advancing Nigeria’s manufacturing sector. The review emphasizes the contributions of microbiological and biotechnological innovations to industrial processes, such as enzyme production, fermentation technology, biofertilizers, biopesticides, bioremediation, and waste valorization, through a review of recent literature and empirical findings. The study also finds gaps between research institutions and industrial application, which it attributes to poor technology transfer mechanisms, weak policy frameworks, insufficient funding, and little cooperation between academics and industry. Case studies demonstrate how indigenous microbial strains have been utilized in food processing, pharmaceuticals, and environmental management, suggesting a high potential for scalability and commercialization. The study advocates for increased investment in research infrastructure, reform of intellectual property laws, and the establishment of innovation hubs to facilitate the translation of scientific knowledge into industrial growth. It also recommends reforms in science education, enhanced public-private partnerships, and stronger government policy support. Ultimately, the integration of microbiology and biotechnology research into Nigeria’s manufacturing landscape offers a viable pathway to industrial transformation, economic diversification, and sustainable development. The findings underscore the importance of science-driven innovation in overcoming manufacturing constraints and positioning Nigeria competitively in the global economy. This work serves as a reference point for policymakers, researchers, industry stakeholders, and development partners committed to fostering a knowledge-based and self-reliant manufacturing sector.
