Bridging the Digital Parenting Divide: A Content Gap Analysis of Toddler Parenting Mobile Applications in the Indian Context

Abstract

Mobile parenting applications are increasingly used as accessible sources of guidance, yet the extent to which toddler-focused applications address diverse developmental, psychosocial, practical and rights-based parenting needs remains unclear in the Indian context. This study assessed the thematic coverage of 40 toddler parenting applications available on the Google Play Store. A descriptive content-analysis design and structured coding framework were used to evaluate selected domains, including working mother support, inclusive parenting types, government child policies, child rights awareness, eco-friendly parenting, sex education, guidance for children with special needs, preschool readiness, parent–child quality time, discipline strategies and sibling relationships. The analysis identified substantial variation in content coverage. Working mother support and inclusive parenting types were each present in 10% of applications, government child policies in 12.5%, child rights awareness and eco-friendly parenting in 17.5% each, sex education in 22.5%, and guidance for children with special needs in 25%. Discipline strategies were available in 37.5% of applications, while preschool readiness and sibling relationship guidance were each present in 42.5%, and parent–child quality time in 45%. These findings indicate that the evaluated applications provide uneven coverage of several practical, developmental, socio-emotional and rights-based domains. More comprehensive, culturally contextualised and developmentally appropriate content frameworks may improve the relevance of digital parenting resources for Indian families.
