Abstract

Diabetes is a type of medical disorder originated from abnormal metabolic condition and derivatives of natural products are used as a tool to fight against this pernicious disease. Plant is a diversified origin of various chemical compounds of medicinal significance which can be applied to mitigate diabetic disorder.  Leafs of Swietenia mahagoni are used for this reason conventionally as a tradition for long period of time. Our purposes were to find out the anti-diabetic effect of Swietenia mahagoni by investigating its extract obtained from its leaves and also establishing its safety profile so that it can be applied to alleviate diabetic disorder. Induction of diabetes in rats were done by applying intraperitoneal injection containing alloxen. Dose of alloxen given were 150 mg/kg bodyweight. Rats were fed the extract of Swietenia mahagoni leaves by maintaining the dose at 750 mg/kg. Blood glucose level and safety profile were measured by evaluating SGOT,SGPT and creatinine level on both non-diabetic and diabetes induced rats prior and after the extract administration. It was noticed that the anti-diabetic effect was similar to that of metformin (p˃ 0.05) administrated at the dose of 500mg/kg. Investigation of  SGPT,SGOT and creatinine level were done to evaluate safety profile. It was observed that the induced diabetic conditions were improved for both metformin and leaf extract. And there were no significant change observed in the rats with nomal physiological condition. Again the extract showed significant depressant effect in tail suspension test and sucrose preference test. It may be therefore surmised that the leaf extract of Swietenia mahagoni could become a potential therapeutic alternative against diabetes mellitus and depressant.
