In contemporary households, cultivating seasonal edible plants around the home can introduce greenery, provide fresh produce and reduce the time, energy and fuel required for frequent vegetable-market visits. Kitchen gardening can also become a healthy habit and recreational activity. In addition to meeting some household requirements for vegetables and herbs, eco-friendly cultivation practices may contribute to sustainable development. Several practical methods are available, including plastic pots, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) grow bags, seed-germination trays for microgreens and hydroponic systems. Natural fertilisers prepared from kitchen and garden waste, vermicompost, compost tea, green manure and diluted sour buttermilk can support green-waste reduction and recycling while providing low-cost alternatives for improving soil conditions and plant growth. Different edible plants offer varied nutritional properties, and growing them alongside ornamental plants can contribute to household access to fresh food. Introducing children to gardening may also develop their understanding of plant growth, encourage curiosity and promote environmentally responsible habits in the context of global warming and climate change. Based on observations, practical experience and the literature discussed, the present study describes the scope, advantages, cultivation steps, limitations and eco-friendly approaches associated with kitchen and terrace gardening in India. It considers seasonal conditions, rainfall, available space, household food preferences and budget, together with precautions relevant to healthy plant growth and suitable yields. The discussion aims to make these practices more accessible to households while encouraging responsible use of available resources.
