Investigating Challenges and Strategies for English Language Education as a Driver for Higher Education Internationalization in Underdeveloped Regions of Western China

Abstract

This study investigates the multifaceted challenges and strategic responses of university English education as a pivotal driver for the internationalization of higher education in the underdeveloped regions of Western China. With globalization reshaping educational landscapes, the role of English language proficiency has become increasingly critical in enabling universities to compete on a global scale. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with educators, students, and administrators to comprehensively assess the current state of English education in this region, identify prominent obstacles, and explore viable solutions. Our findings reveal significant impediments, including insufficient funding, a shortage of qualified English teachers, outdated and unreasonable curriculum design, and cultural differences that hinder effective communication and learning. These challenges not only obstruct the advancement of English proficiency but also limit the broader internationalization efforts of universities. In response, we propose a series of targeted strategies aimed at overcoming these barriers. These include implementing curriculum reforms to enhance the practicality and interactivity of English instruction, developing comprehensive teacher training programs to elevate pedagogical standards and professional competence, and establishing mechanisms for international cooperation and exchange that broaden students' global perspectives and cultural awareness. Furthermore, we advocate for the integration and sharing of educational resources among institutions to improve overall teaching quality and student outcomes. The research underscores the vital role of English education in enhancing the international competitiveness of universities in Western China and fostering regional economic development. By effectively implementing these strategies, universities can better navigate the complexities of internationalization, ultimately enhancing their global academic standing and influence. This study serves as a valuable resource for educational administrators and policymakers seeking to advance the internationalization of higher education in Western China and contribute to the region's socio-economic growth.
