Butane Poisoning Complicated by Severe Rhabdomyolysis and Compartment Syndrome: A Case Report

Abstract

Carbon Monoxide poisoning remains the leading cause of toxic morbidity and mortality in the world. It remains a public health problem. The occurrence of compartment syndrome and rhabdomyolysis is an exceptional complication but can worsen the prognosis of this intoxication. Compartment syndrome can contribute to a certain worsening of the functional and vital prognosis when it is ignored or dominated by other symptoms, especially neurological symptoms. We report the case of a patient who presented with compartment syndrome of the left leg and rhabdomyolysis following a butane intoxication which progressed well but who remained functionally with a paralysis of the levators of the left foot.
