Agricultural mechanisation research relevant to northern Nigeria spans farm-power selection, service markets, irrigation, harvesting, labour allocation and emerging digital technologies. Its policy interpretation is complicated by differences between research visibility, geographical relevance and evidential strength. This critical narrative review integrates a bounded bibliometric analysis with appraisal of the substantive literature published through 31 July 2026. Searches of open scholarly and regional indexes, supplemented by citation tracing and source verification, informed the selection of 14 focal Nigeria-relevant journal articles and a wider methodological and comparative bibliography. Publication metadata were counted descriptively, while study findings were assessed according to design, measurement, geographical scope and inferential limitations. Six focal articles reported explicit northern field sites, three addressed Nigeria nationally and five included Nigeria in comparative analyses. The focal articles appeared in 14 journals between 2013 and 2025; ten were published from 2020 onwards. These are properties of the selected corpus, not estimates of regional publication growth or disciplinary influence. The synthesis indicates that mechanisation is better understood as access to timely, operation-specific services than as tractor ownership alone. Evidence concerning private hiring, rice harvesting and crop-production complementarities supports conditional benefits, but does not establish a uniform regional effect on productivity, employment or sustainability. Perception surveys, predictive models and willingness-to-adopt studies answer different questions from controlled interventions. Gendered time allocation, equipment reliability, maintenance, soil loading and water governance remain essential analytical dimensions. A defensible research agenda should combine an openly documented regional bibliography with representative service-access surveys, longitudinal provider records and operation-specific field evaluations. Mechanisation policy should consequently be assessed against service reliability, distributional outcomes and environmental performance rather than machinery counts or bibliometric prominence. The review provides an auditable account of a limited evidence base while distinguishing plausible mechanisms from effects demonstrated in particular northern settings.
