Animal behaviour is a central component of biological organisation because it links an organism's internal state with environmental information, social interactions, resource availability, and evolutionary history. Contemporary behavioural biology integrates classical ethology with ecology, evolution, neuroscience, endocrinology, cognition, movement ecology, and conservation science. This review synthesises major principles of animal behaviour, including proximate mechanisms, ontogeny, adaptive function, evolutionary history, learning, communication, foraging, reproductive strategies, parental care, social organisation, territoriality, cooperation, biological rhythms, movement, and responses to anthropogenic disturbance. Particular attention is given to Indian research, in which studies of wasps, elephants, macaques, free-ranging dogs, honeybees, buffalo calves, birds, and other taxa demonstrate how behaviour can be investigated from individual to landscape scales. The review further considers observational sampling, focal-animal and scan-sampling approaches, ethograms, dominance indices, telemetry, playback experiments, automated recording, and quantitative methods. Behavioural evidence may provide early indications of habitat degradation, human–wildlife conflict, and animal-welfare concerns. Ethical behavioural research requires minimal disturbance together with transparent and reproducible protocols. Future progress is expected to depend on integrating field observations with biologging, automated video and acoustic analysis, spatial statistics, comparative approaches, and long-term datasets. Such integration can strengthen fundamental understanding of animal behaviour while improving its application to wildlife management, animal welfare, conservation, and human–animal coexistence.
