Goal Orientation, Adaptive Learning Strategies and Academic Achievement of Community Health Students in Primary Health Care

Abstract

This study examines individual goal orientation and learning strategies used in achieving academic success among Community Health Students in Primary Health Care Examinations. The study suggests that teachers do influence the n goals students pursue through instructional practices and procedures. A total of 82 students in the Community Health Department, College of Health Technology were used for the study. Primary Health Care Achievement Test (PHCAT) and Patterns of Adaptive Learning Survey (PALS) instruments were used. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics which included correlation co-efficient. The results clearly revealed significant relationship between goal orientation, learning strategies and academic achievement in Primary Health Care Examinations. The findings have implications for teachers of health programmes/ sciences to motivate their students during the course of instruction. The study suggests that teachers do influence the 10 goals students pursue through instructional practices and procedures.
