Abstract

Aims: To determine the predictive influence of self-care profile (SCP) domains on the quality of life (QOL) domains of clients with hypertension in a Philippine rural municipality. Study Design:  Cross-sectional. Place and Duration of Study: San Joaquin, Iloilo, Western Visayas Region, Philippines, between April 2025 and February 2026. Methodology: A total of 105 enrollees with hypertension from the Healthy Hearts Demonstration Project participated and were selected using stratified random sampling. Validated Hypertension SCP and World Health Organization QOL Scale questionnaires were utilised. Stepwise multiple regression identified determinants. Technical review and ethical approval were secured prior to implementation. Results: Most respondents were older women, had tertiary education, were taking two to three antihypertensive drugs, and had longstanding hypertension. Mean SCP was 198.12/240, with motivation as the highest domain, followed by self-efficacy and behaviour. Mean QOL was 75.61/100, highest in the environmental domain, then psychological health, social relationships, and physical health. SCP and QOL did not differ significantly by sex, age, education, or the number of medications but differed according to BP reading and, for QOL, duration of diagnosis. SCP correlated with QOL (P < 0.001). Motivation predicted physical and environmental health, and self-efficacy predicted psychological health (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Despite efforts to curb hypertension, uncontrolled hypertension remains a concern, with clinical factors influencing SCP and QOL more than sociodemographic factors. Beyond standardised management, innovative, patient-centred strategies that strengthen motivation and self-efficacy are recommended. Aligned with the Universal Health Care mandate, these interventions can enhance life quality.
