Abstract

The rapid advancement of agricultural automation is transforming crop production and management worldwide. In India, diverse agro-ecological zones, soils, and climatic conditions offer immense potential for horticultural crop cultivation, which contributes significantly to productivity, employment generation, and food-processing industries. This review aims to synthesize recent technological innovations and digital tools that are reshaping horticultural crop management in India, focusing on their role in enhancing productivity and sustainability. Relevant scientific literature, reports, and case studies published between 2010 and 2025 were critically reviewed using databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The analysis revealed that technological interventions including nuclear techniques, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, precision breeding, and hydroponic systems are revolutionizing various aspects of horticultural management. In particular, the integration of remote sensing, robotics, and machine learning enables real-time crop monitoring, pest and disease diagnosis, and precision input management. Digital platforms also facilitate market access, financial inclusion, and data-driven decision-making. The review concludes that the convergence of these technologies can significantly enhance resource-use efficiency and resilience in the horticultural sector. It recommends greater investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building, and policy frameworks to accelerate technology adoption and ensure sustainable agricultural growth.
