Laser-Assisted Excision of Lower Lip Mucocele in a Two-Year-Old Child: A Case Report

Abstract

Background: Oral mucocele is a common benign lesion of the minor salivary glands, with a reported prevalence of approximately 2.4 cases per 1,000 individuals. Although it is most frequently observed in children and young adults, management in toddlers is often challenging because of limited cooperation, making minimally invasive treatment approaches particularly valuable. Case Presentation: A 2-year-old child presented with a painless swelling on the inner aspect of the lower lip that had gradually increased in size over several weeks. Clinical examination revealed a solitary, dome-shaped, translucent-pink swelling measuring approximately 12 × 10 mm on the lower labial mucosa. A provisional diagnosis of mucocele was established. The lesion was successfully excised using a diode laser under local anaesthesia. The procedure was completed with minimal bleeding, without the need for sutures, and was well tolerated by the child. Healing was uneventful, and no recurrence was observed during follow-up. Conclusion: Laser-assisted excision is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment modality for paediatric mucoceles, providing excellent haemostasis, minimal postoperative discomfort, rapid healing, and the potential to avoid general anaesthesia in carefully selected young children.
